Ibeji Botanica: Tradition with a Modern Spirit

Ibeji Botanica: Tradition with a Modern Spirit

A new botanica just opened up in Bushwick — Ibeji Botanica, run by twin Dominican brothers Josh and Justin — and I have to say, I absolutely love the vibe. It’s beautiful to see something like this in Bushwick, especially knowing how much gentrification has changed the neighborhood. With rent prices rising and long-time
residents being pushed out, seeing a space that reflects our roots and culture feels powerful.

Ibeji Botanica brings a fresh, modern twist to the traditional botanicas many of us grew up with. The space is airy and warm, with a bit of a bohemian feel — yet the moment you walk in, you’re greeted by that familiar, nostalgic scent that instantly takes you back to the botanicas our abuelas, tías, and mamis used to visit. The front window display is beautiful — lined with traditional candles for tranquility, prosperity, cleansing, and road opening — the same candles many of us remember seeing around our homes and on family altars.

What really makes this space special is how Josh and Justin are carrying on their family’s legacy. They shared that their grandmother — who has a small altar honored in the corner of the shop — passed this knowledge down from her mother. It’s a family tradition rooted in spirituality, healing, and culture. Seeing two young men of color keeping that alive, while also educating others about what botanicas, brujería, and African spiritual practices represent, felt deeply meaningful.

Even though the shop has a contemporary look, it still feels like home. The lighting, the setup, and even the customers — a beautiful mix of people coming in and out — reflect a true sense of community. Their prices are accessible, and you can tell they care about making their space welcoming to everyone.

This visit wasn’t planned — it was one of those moments that felt meant to be. I happened to be nearby when someone mentioned the new botanica, and I felt drawn to go in. From the second I walked through the door, the energy was calm, gentle, and aligned. Josh and Justin were so kind and soft-spoken. They even gifted me a cleansing candle to light for my grandmother, who recently passed away from cancer — a gesture that touched me deeply. It felt like the universe confirming I was exactly where I needed to be, doing what I was meant to do: connecting, honoring, and sharing stories like theirs.

Ibeji Botanica isn’t just a shop — it’s a reminder of where we come from, how we heal, and how our culture continues to live through us. 🦋
