Maps depict the dynamic system that is the impact of human settlement on the earth. Increasingly, I see the patterns of development marked out on the maps I use in my work not simply as fascinating visual systems but as a depictions of the wounds we are inflicting on the earth. These observations led me to the River Ring pieces, which, using collaged maps from around the world, depict rivers as a ring embracing a bruised earth surface.
I grew up in Colorado. I have a BA from Carleton College and an MFA from Pratt Institute. In addition to my work as an artist, I am a dedicated elementary school art teacher and teach in the New York City Public Schools. You can learn more about my work at www.rebeccarileyart.com
