FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
“BETA Spaces”: Sunday, November 9, 2008 11am – 7pm
Arts in Bushwick presents a one-day festival of curated exhibitions.
Arts in Bushwick is pleased to present the Bushwick Exhibition Triangle of Alternative Spaces (BETA Spaces), a free one-day festival of independently curated group exhibitions. BETA Spaces offers curators an opportunity to present interdisciplinary exhibitions in alternative venues—apartments, studios and street corners—as well as galleries. By encouraging artists to collaborate across media, disciplines and environments, BETA Spaces provides artists with an opportunity to develop and showcase conceptual group exhibitions that provide new and innovative contexts for their work. After successfully premiering last December as “Bushwick Open Spaces,” the festival has been renamed to distinguish between this event and the summer’s Bushwick Open Studios.
The festival will take place within an approximately 10-block triangle south of Johnson/Cypress Street, east of Bushwick Avenue, and west of Starr Street. The compact geographic focus means that visitors will be able to access almost thirty venues and hundreds of artists in a single day. The event will highlight a thriving but often invisible artistic nexus, transforming this area into a vibrant site of creative expression.
In addition to the exhibitions, Arts in Bushwick will host a discussion forum at Bushwick IMPACT, exploring issues of sustainability, gentrification, displacement and change among diverse Bushwick residents, stakeholders, and organizations, and a Slam poetry event at Lumenhouse, presented in conjunction with louderARTS. BETA Spaces will conclude with an after-party at Wreck Room from 7-11pm, where everyone can enjoy live performances, a slide show of pictures recapping the day, and drink specials.
Programs for BETA Spaces containing a map and complete listing of exhibits and events will be available two weeks prior to the festival. For further information on BETA Spaces, please visit www.artsinbushwick.org, or contact Steve Weintraub at Steve@artsinbushwick.org.
