We are both recent painting graduates from the Rhode Island School of Design, using our shared studio space to work individually as well as in collaboration under the name ‘Miyoconko.’ Sophie makes work in a variety of media including plaster, cardboard, wood, cement, ink, paint, and fabric. Her small-scale plaster and cement objects refer to gestural abstract paintings, while remaining sculptural in weight and display. Her larger paintings on shaped cardboard invoke a colorful and playful sensibility. Alison paints mainly in oil, using acrylic, collage, and spray paint as well. She depicts brightly colored, representational tableaus of plants and food, often utilizing an abstract painterly language to describe the forms. ‘Miyoconko’ is our joint project in which we combine elements from each individual practice to make temporary sculptures, performance pieces, and documentation in photographs.
