Who knows when exactly these birds took over the space? They were here before we were – that’s all we know for sure. How long has that hole been in the side of the building? Maybe a hundred years… maybe more. Or more specifically, when was that space built? It’s directly over the landlady’s shower – a whole mess of pigeons. She doesn’t seem to mind though. You can hear them from the toilet next to her shower room. You can hear them cooing and chasing each other around. You can hear the squeakers too.

Which was how we first found them – an incessant cooing sound through the wall. It was bright outside, the middle of the afternoon. I climbed out onto the fire escape to investigate. There was the fogged out window to the landlady’s shower room, and above it a perfect hole about the size of a human head and as round as a full moon. I brought the ladder through the window and propped it against the brick wall. Then I stuck my head, face first, into the hole. Inside was a tiny room, untouched by any human hand, with thickly impastoed bird shit along the floor, several nooks for nesting birds and two eggs sitting in a bowl-like depression in the shit. Above the ceiling was a second unknowable layer with birds hopping in and out, and against all logic the space was illuminated by a soft diffuse light whose origin I couldn’t initially locate…
