The Schoolhouse Artists

One of the places I was the most excited to see this BOS was the Schoolhouse. Housing thirty artists in live/work loft-type spaces within an actual former school, this incredible space did not disappoint. I walked in to find Willy Muse in a linen suit playing a Matel guitar from the 80s while roller-skating in circles. Wandering through, I met Eliot Kurtz, a screenprinter and candy maker, offering beautiful paintings and handmade ginger/mango/ghost pepper lollipops. Upstairs Mariette Papic displayed text-as-art William Blake pages strung about, and Chris Chludenski’s studio was hung with quirky and haunting found-object mobiles. And that’s only a fraction of all the art on display at this marvelous space!

Click through for a Q&A with the artists!

Making hits during BOS

It’s not like I needed a reason to head over to Famous Accountants, one of my most favorite Buswhick galleries, during Bushwick Open Studios. Matthew Miller’s eery self-portraits are a great enough attraction on their own (just ask Ken Johnson of the New York Times.) But if you passed through on Saturday afternoon and were daring enough, stupid enough, drunk enough–or all three–then you had a chance to do something extra special.

The boys from PassKontrol had set up shop–a record shop, actually. You could choose from among a few instrumental tracks and then sing your own lyrics or play along with the band. Afterwards you left with a copy of your track and a shot at stardom.

Paul Rome (go see him in the Bushwack Series) and I teamed up, against our better judgment, to record our original track: Lost in the Bodega. It was…unforgettable. Paul did his thing on the keyboard and I, well, I gave it my, um, best on the microphone. Judge the results for yourself.

When you’ve recovered go check out Famous Accountants and also the Onderdonk Sculpture Garden, which will host some of the members of Pass Kontrol for live music and a BBQ on Sunday.

And…they’re off!

The fifth annual edition of Bushwick Open Studios was off to a great start yesterday. As the sun set the pleasant vibe intensified–art was seen, stories were heard, drinks were imbibed. Here’s a small taste of the goings-on. Looking forward to an amazing weekend!

Spit-Take Fridays

There are folks out there who cannot tell a joke to save their lives. I should know–I’m notorious for killing both jokes and sarcasm.  (Yes, it is possible to kill sarcasm. My former college roommates can confirm.)  However, I’m pretty good at laughing at jokes. If you’re like me and prefer to leave the joke-tellin’ to the experts, those practiced individuals who are innately funny persons—join the crowd at Fort Useless TONIGHT, 9pm for Spit-Take Friday, a series of comedic acts put together by George Flanagan.  I suppose you can be a funny person and still join the audience….

Here’s the line up:

Alice Wetterlund
Arden Myrin
Robbie Collier
Sara Schaeffer
Joe Cocozzello

I’ve seen 2 Spit-Take shows at Fort Useless this year.  The people leading the laughter create stories about everything–from Bushwick to Obama,  seagulls who deliver trail mix, and frozen pizza. Make sure to catch one.

A Biergarten Pops Up in Bushwick

We tend to associate Bushwick Open Studios as an art filled, visual event with musical performances and a growing interest in film. However, food–one of the most basic reasons for coming together–also shapes the distinct character of our neighborhood. That’s true of any cultural center. This weekend, a local sandwich carter dedicated  to German-inspired menus and green-mindedness will host a temporary biergarten at the Moore Street  Market. They are known as Farmcart. Perhaps you’ve seen their sandwiches at the Wycoff-Starr coffee house or Archive. (Foolishly,  I once lamented having to order a tuna fish sandwich made by Farmcart because it was the only kind left at the close of the day, and I’m never inclined to ask for tuna first. However,  I experienced love at first bite.  Farmcart’s tuna sandwich is one of my favorite sandwichs in NYC. Lighter and zestier than you’d expecet, it makes a great meal for the summer time.)
Michelle Lopez, director of Farmcart, is also a good source to contact for anyone interested in  green efforts entering Bushwick.  She advocates more local options and green vendors at the Moore Street Market, which she compares to the Essex Street Market of the Lower East Side. Michelle and other groups such as Urban Oyster hope to highlight the rich history of places like Moore Street Market throughout 2011. According to Cindy VandenBosch of Urban Oyster, Farmcart’s biergarten alongside the German-themed foods present an “interesting historical parallel in a neighborhood that was once the heart of Brooklyn’s German speaking community (in the mid to late 19th century).”
Stay tuned for a closer look  at the Immigrant Foodways tours from Urban Oyster and more on sites like Moore Street Market in the coming weeks.  For this weekend, mark your maps and stop by Farmcart’s biergarten for food, local beers, and maybe hear about history of the hood.
Farmcart’s Biergarten will take place at 110 Moore Street, corner of Moore and Humboldt Street inside of Moore Street Market. Also see this BOS directory profile for more details.
Also, from Urban Oyster:
We’re going to be doing a “sneak preview” version of our tour on Saturday, June 4th.  While I know a lot of the Bushwick Open Studios events are spontaneous, we’ll need people to make their reservations in advance of the tour so that we can make arrangements for the food in advance.   While the tour will normally cost $39, we will be offering it for only $25 this coming Saturday (people just need to use the following discount code when they buy tix: bushwickopenstudios).  That will cover food and beverage tastings, the tour guide, and a wonderful and unique experience. Tickets can be purchased through the following page.

Stereoactive NYC & Fort Useless

Clouder playing at Fort Useless, photo via Maryanne Ventrice

Jeremiah McVay, organizes both Stereoactive NYC and Fort Useless, one of the BOS’11 Hubs. Below, he answers a few questions about ongoing focuses, music in NYC + out-of-state and the Bushwick scene. Just ask him about good shows around town–he’ll give you plenty, maybe even more than your average click through L magazine.

AT: Tell us about your current projects for Stereoactive NYC.

Jeremiah McVay: Since Fort Useless began hosting shows in late 2009, booking shows there have been the primary focus for StereaoctiveNYC. We’ve been planning a relaunch of our website at www.stereoactivenyc.com to begin, once again, listing shows by our curated list of local artists and shows and documenting shows through photos and video, as well as featuring mp3s–hopefully that will be ready to go live sometime this summer. We’re also co-sponsoring a showcase at Spike Hill during the Northside Festival.

Lost? Need information? Find a hub!

Bushwick Open Studios 2011 is the biggest yet with more than 350 shows in 130 buildings spread over four square miles of Bushwick, parts of East Williamsburg, Bedford-Stuyvesant and Ridgewood. To help you get oriented, we’ve designated a handful of locations to act as informational hubs. At each hub space, you will find Arts in Bushwick volunteers who can provide you with assistance, maps and other promotional materials. See below for a list of BOS2011 hubs–even if you don’t need any information, drop by and say hi!

Interstate Projects

For BOS ’11 Interstate Projects will act as one of several Hub Spaces, which are sites for visitors to congregate for information about BOS. Pop into the space and say “howdy,” during the festival, or visit during Interstate’s regular hours on Saturdays 12-6.  They are located at 56 Bogart Street, right across the street from the Morgan Avenue stop of the L train.

Through Interstate Projects, Tom Weinrich brings the work of contemporary artists from all over the nation into Bushwick. In this profile, we get to glimpse the type of energy it takes to bring that all together.

Audrey Tran: Tell us about your current projects.

Tom Weinrich: Our current exhibit is the first solo show by Natalie Westbrook, a recent MFA graduate from Yale.  She makes really incredible paintings and drawings of tropical plant life.  The show explores her progression from large baroque allegorical works to her more recent experimentation with abstraction.  The next show, Composite Factor, opens on Friday June 3rd, and features Justin Berry, Arielle Falk, Jesse Hulcher, and Alyssa Taylor Wendt.  We’ll also be doing an outdoor video project at night during the whole weekend of BOS called “Videos on the Front.”  There will be more than 30 artists involved from all over the country.  The videos will be projected onto the wall of a steel yard across the street from the gallery at the corner of Bogart St. and Grattan St.

Bodega Wine Bar

Since its arrival in 2010, Bodega Wine Bar has been the spot to stroll toward to sample good wines alongside delicate refreshments, the sort of bites fit for those who call themselves “foodies.” Whatever your tastes are, be not shy about asking for recommendations or pairings.  The staff knows the menu very well. Aside from food and drinks, Bodega also hosts readings, listening parties, and film nights. In a few words, this wine bar presents an intermingling of culinary, visual, and audio arts.

This year, Bodega is a BOS’11 sponsor.  When asked about why Bodega supports the Bushwick Arts community, owners Gina Leone and Ben Warren said they are part of that community.  Ben  is a musician and his sister Danielle is a Bushwick artist (Danielle Warren’s work will also be on view at Bodega during BOS).  Gina calls herself, Ben’s groupie, and said ”Artists need to drink and talk! Seriously, artists are integral to culture and this community, our bar included, has to support them and nurture them or we’ll end up like Manhattan.”  This conversation, happening all over Bushwick, recalls writer Dave Hickey’s “Romancing the Looky-Loo’s,” which describes the socialization of art.  In this essay, Hickey writes, ”No painting is ever sold nor essay ever written nor band booked nor exhibition scheduled that is not the consequence of previous social interaction, of gossip, body language, fashion, dish, and telephone chatter…on the validation of schmooze.”  With this in mind, sites like Bodega provide the ground for art to operate as a democracy. A friendly democracy. One local visitor recently described the bar as a “Bushwick Cheers.”

Sponsor Profile via Bushwick Daily: Henry Glucroft of Little Skips

Another great post brought to you by the Bushwick Daily. Henry is an Arts in Bushwick volunteer and Little Skips, which Henry co-owns, is a BOS2011 sponsor. Thanks, dude, for all your help!

Also, make sure to check out Bushwick Daily’s BOS show at Curbs and Stoops Active Space. The blog has awesomely paired together Bushwick artists to create work inspired by each other.   Details here.

Together with the bloggers from Arts in Bushwick, Bushwick Daily is introducing local artists and spaces getting ready for Bushwick Open Studios. We were curious about the plans of Little Skips, a popular coffee/ creative hang out spot. We chatted with Henry Glucroft. a co-owner of “the home” to many of us…

Where are you located?

We’re located at 941 Willoughby.

What kind space are you?

According to Yelp and Google, we are a café primarily, then an art space and a restaurant. According to me, we are a place for people to come and meet, interact, and exchange ideas… Coffee and some snacks help to support the ability to offer that space to others….
