Alex Chowaniec’s drawings, paintings, and media projects engage intertwined questions of technology and the body; a gendered body as a social technology, and a national body as enviro-political mythology.
A Canadian artist living in Brooklyn, Chowaniec has exhibited internationally, including at the Barbican Centre, London; Galerija Plevnik-Kronkowska, Slovenia; Art Toronto, Galerie d’Art Jean-Claude Bergeron, and the Agnes Etherington Art Centre in Canada; SOMArts Cultural Center and The Lab in San Francisco; and Knockdown Center, Kleinert/James Center for the Arts, lorimoto, Grace Exhibition Space, and StoreFront Ten Eyck in New York. Chowaniec holds an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, graduating with the Irene Pijoan Memorial Painting Award a SECA Award (SFMOMA) nomination. She received her BFA (Honours) from Queen’s University (Kingston, ON).
She is a Producer of Lynn Hershman Leeson’s “!Women Art Revolution” (2010) and is a co-author of the !W.A.R. graphic novel with Hershman Leeson and legendary Zap Comix artist Spain Rodriguez. In 2011 she was a Sundance New Frontier Artist collaborator with the new media installation, RAW/WAR, an interactive community-curated archive of the histories of women’s art.
