Magic Carpet Ride I is a mixed-media work on paper from my current series The Fez as Storyteller–a group of work that explores the Middle Eastern, Indian, and Sephardic traditions that formed my family heritage and psychological legacy. The work critiques and honors this history while questioning issues of gender relationships, inequity, indoctrination, and the conventions social systems perpetuate over generations.
I exhibit my work extensively in solo and group shows throughout the U.S. and abroad, including Mexico, South America, and Wales. Recent group exhibitions were seen at Arcilesi-Homberg Fine Art in the Lower East Side (NY), Schelfhaudt Gallery, University of Bridgeport (CT) and the Morean Art Center (FL),; upcoming shows this fall include Facie: Self-Portrait Interpreted by 25 Artists at Galerie Protege (NY). My work is in public and private collections, including the Chrysler Museum of Art/(VA), the Housatonic Museum of Art, (CT) and the Islip Art Museum (NY), and the Westport Permanent Art Collection (CT). I have received reviews in numerous publications, such as The New York Times, The Hartford Courant, CT Post, D’arte magazine, Art New England, The Examiner, and Manhattan Arts. Among my awards are Fellowships in drawing and painting from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Connecticut Commission on the Arts respectively, as well as residencies at Weir Farm/National Historic site and the Vermont Studio Center. I hold a Master of Fine Arts from Queens College/CUNY, live and work in CT, and maintain a studio in Chelsea, NY.
